Cancun - Mexico

The Mexican government makes efforts to protect major tourist destinations.  Be particularly alert on public transport, at airports and bus stations.  Theft on buses is common, so keep an eye on your belongings.  Avoid unlicensed taxi drivers

The following goods can be brought into Mexico by travellers over 18 years of age without incurring customs duty;  200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 200g of tobacco, 3 litres of spirits and 6 litres of wine.  Other goods to the value of US$500.

Travellers to the UK can bring in:

• beer - 16 litres
• wine (not sparkling) - 4 litres

You can also bring in either:

• spirits and other liquors over 22% alcohol - 1 litre
• fortified wine (eg port, sherry), sparkling wine and alcoholic drinks up to 22% alcohol - 2 litres

You can split this last allowance, eg you could bring 1 litre of fortified wine and half a litre of spirits (both half of your allowance).

You can bring in one from the following:

• 200 cigarettes
• 100 cigarillos
• 50 cigars
• 250g tobacco

You can split this allowance - so you could bring in 100 cigarettes and 25 cigars (both half of your allowance).

The local currency is the Mexican Pesos.  There are currency exchange offices at the international airports.  You will need to present your passport to exchange your money.  Not all banks provide exchange services.  ATM using debit card is one of the easiest ways to buy pesos, although you will have to pay commission for the service they often have more favourable exchange rates.

Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay.  Although a visa is not required for UK passport holders, you will require a Tourist Card.  These cards are available on arrival by completing and immigration form at the port of entry or onboard flights to Mexico.

Tropical Cancun is a reliable vacation destination as there are very little temperature variations throughout the year.  Cancun temperatures are moderated by consistent trade winds, and warm conditions (not steamy hot) are the order of the day. The annual mean temperature is right at 27.0 °C (80.6 °F).
Temperatures are a bit milder November through February, with the warmest (or hottest) conditions running May through September. Note that high humidity is common. Rainfall is scattered across the calendar, but most falls from early August through October.
The hurricane season runs from June to early-November, and Cancun can be an occasional target; however, advance warnings are reliable.
